Q&A

Anonymous asked: You, like me, seem to like your fashion, what sort of things/people/designers inspire your "look" ??

I don’t really have any influences really - I usually just wear/buy what fits or suits.

I’ve always been a bit random when it comes to dressing - I mean i’ve had (and still do have) some shockers of outfits - but I don’t really care!

I think I suffer because i’m pretty average and don’t really look like anyone (famous) so when I look about no-ones look really would suit me.

I’ve been wearing plaid shirts since I was about 6 or 7 so that trend isnt new on me, there is a photo of me in chinos at about 4, and 8 and 13 etc - although i’ve never been ‘in-fashion’ so its funny really!

i’m not some indie guy who can get away with super skinny jeans, or a punk dude that can get away with all the over sized tees or coloured hair/piercings etc and i’m not smart enough (or rich enough) to be influenced by a smart style like Tom Ford has.

Being honest 80% of my wardrobe comes from H&M and other than that odds and sods from random other shops. Topman I think has become a scourge on the world and everyone dresses identically from there - I even have 3 students (out of a class of 13) who all came in wear the same sweatshirt that they all bought the same weekend without realising and all wore on the same day! It’s also amazingly overpriced and really bad quality these days.

It also seems the shop to go if you’re a chav and have a slight bit of money.

it also breeds wankers. Whenever I go into a Topman the overwhelming sense of others self importance makes me cringe. Poser wannabies that have no purpose in life so they get their mummy and daddy to buy them lots of clothes from Topman and tattoos on their hands and neck and then become Tumblr poster boys, or those douchebags that you find in any remotely indie bars or clubs posing about.

I’d hate to be able to be pigeon holed into a ‘style’ or ‘lifestyle’ even though it would seem that I keep being pigeon holed as a ‘hipster’ on here. If you took 2 minutes to search hipster on tumblr you’d find out what this ‘sub-culture’ was actually like. (any tags of hipster on my pictures are purely ironic - usually for the amusement of my friends aha!)

I think I’m starting to realize why I get such strange looks on the street everyday.
Especially when it’s raining and everyone else is in head to toe black. Eh. I just don’t do boring.

You see I like the fact that Sam stands out in her city dressed like this, because here, if you dont dress like this then you’ll stand out.
The search for individuality that we experience in the UK ultimately descends into people following others fashion and style. It is quite intriguing to see the wiwt website and the people that post on there.
You get 70% of people taking a picture before they leave the house or wherever (I do this just before I leave the house - hence the awful mirror/hallway) then you get 25% of people posing inanely to show off their wonderful outfit/body/face, then you get 2.5% who take a picture of something daft they’ve had to wear during the day, then 2.5% posing in some way or with something that is ‘supposed’ to make you go WOW.
What you do see however is such an eclectic array of outfits. It makes me remember to dress for myself and to just wear what I want to!
Although this does make it even more noticeable on Tumblr and in the outside world of how many people dress the same, following the sheep.
I’m fed up of seeing the same thing over and over again and people being praised to high heaven about it. The fact that some ‘alternative’ girls who rip the piss out of ‘barbie/plastic’ type girls for their excessive make up and tan, lack out clothes etc, is just as bad and as hypocritical when it is coming from the other side.
Take a look at the wiwt website and what you see are a fantastic range of different people. I wear what I feel comfortable in and what I like. I’ve been told I look a twat, or ben rediculed in the past for what i’ve worn, but I don’t care anymore - I dress for me.
I love that Sam dresses for herself, and i’m sure you’ll agree, being yourself is entirely more fun.

Minor clothing gripe.

When Topman design clothes, or I should really say, when Topman exploit newly graduated designers to design clothes, they should really factor in that just because you have a skinny waist, it does not mean that you have matchstick legs.

Due to the fact we never had a car growing up, and until I was 23, I never had a car, I used to get walked EVERYWHERE. If we missed a bus from town to my nans, we would walk it - roughly 4/5 miles, I did this from the age of about 3 or 4, and would walk absolutely everywhere I could. Couple this with doing lots of hill/mountain walking either it be for Duke of Edinburgh Awards, or Bela or Walking group Leader awards - I still do this a fair bit, just a couple of weeks ago we did a brisk 12 mile hike in Yorkshire.

The problem being, this develops the muscles in your legs. Now i’m not saying my legs are toned as hell, but they have a bit of meat on them, solid meat. This proves a problem to trying on Topman trousers due to my quads effectively either stopping the trousers being pulled up further, or being wide enough to pull the front of the trousers effectively stopping me being able to fasten at the waist. To fit my quads and my waist, I would have had to go up three sizes (!!!) then the rest of the trousers were baggy as hell.

I’m actually finding i’m buying less and less from Topman these days as their prices sky rocket, and the quality of the clothes are actually going way down.

Or is it just me? Should I take the blame because i’m not the skinny ideal of the Topman vision? The vision of these ‘too cool to care about life’ people, that ask their mums to give them lifts to the parties where they can get wasted on a wkd and ‘get baked’ on two puffs of a spliff. I forget, that the media is pushing us all to get to the point where testosterone and oestrogen is at such low levels we have begun to see these man/woman woman/man hybrids take over the mainstream media, which is purely a horrible role model to aspire to be. Guys I saw in the shop today were so thin, there are only a couple of ways to achieve that look, and before people have a go, I know, i’ve been there, for almost 4/5 years in my teens. It is not something I would ever wish to see or hear other people doing.

Gripe over, sorry.
